Frequently Asked Questions
How do AI suggestions work?
Stashmark uses Apple's Natural Language framework to analyze page titles and suggest relevant categories and tags. All processing happens on your device—no data is sent to external servers.
Can I create custom categories?
Yes! Click the folder icon with a plus in the toolbar, or right-click in the sidebar and select "New Category." You can customize the name, icon, and color for each category.
How do I organize categories hierarchically?
When creating or editing a category, select a "Parent Category" to nest it under another category. You can create multi-level folder structures just like in Finder.
Can I reorder my bookmarks and categories?
Yes! Simply drag and drop bookmarks within a list to reorder them. Categories in the sidebar can also be dragged to change their order.
How do I search my bookmarks?
Use the search field in the sidebar. You can search by title, URL, or tags. Type #tagname to search specifically by tag.
Can I import bookmarks from other browsers?
Yes! Go to the menu → Import. Stashmark supports standard HTML bookmark files (exported from Chrome, Firefox, Safari) and its own JSON format.
How do I export my bookmarks?
Go to the menu → Export. Your bookmarks will be saved as a JSON file in your Downloads folder. You can use this for backup or transferring to another Mac.
How do I back up my bookmarks?
Use the Export feature (Menu → Export) to save your bookmarks as a JSON or HTML file. You can import this file on another Mac or keep it as a backup.
Troubleshooting
The Safari extension isn't showing
Go to Safari → Settings → Extensions and ensure "Stashmark Extension" is checked. If it's not listed, try restarting Safari or your Mac.
The extension says "Cannot connect to app"
Make sure the main Stashmark app has been launched at least once. The extension needs the app to be initialized to share data. Launch Stashmark from your Applications folder.
My categories disappeared
Check if you're looking at a filtered view (Favorites, Unread, etc.). Click "All Links" in the sidebar to see everything. If data is truly missing, check your iCloud sync status or restore from a Time Machine backup.
Import isn't working
Ensure your file is in a supported format (JSON or HTML). For HTML files, use the standard Netscape bookmark format that browsers export. Large files may take a moment to process.
